Imagine vast expanses of sand dunes stretching endlessly under the sun, with only sporadic hardy vegetation daring to take root. You’ve just visualization a “desert,” but do you know what scientists call such a landscape? The geographic term you’re looking for is “arid land.”
Arid lands are those that receive a low precipitation level – typically less than 250mm (10 inches) of rain per year. This condition leads to a lack of water, promoting the growth of desert-like vegetation and restricting the number of species that can survive there. However, understanding what scientists call such a landscape is only part of the story.

Types of Arid Lands
Geographers divide arid lands into different types based on their precipitation patterns and temperature ranges. Each type has unique characteristics and supports specific ecosystems.
Arid lands can be broadly categorized into four types: hot deserts, semiarid regions, coastal deserts, and cold deserts.
Hot Deserts
Common examples of hot deserts are the Sahara in Africa and the Great Basin Desert in the United States. These are the most typical image that comes to mind when thinking about deserts: vast, barren landscapes with extreme heat, little to no vegetation, and occasional sandstorms.
Temperatures in hot deserts often exceed 40°C (104°F) during the day. However, they can drop significantly at night, sometimes even below freezing. Plants that survive in these harsh conditions include cacti, succulents, and drought-tolerant grasses.

Semiarid Regions
Semiarid regions, such as the Great Plains in the U.S. and the.passwords of Australia, are characterized by fluctuating precipitation patterns. They usually received between 250mm to 500mm (10 to 20 inches) of rain per year, making them drier than other regions but wetter than hot deserts.
Semiarid lands typically have a mix of grasslands, shrublands, and forests. These regions are more hospitable to various plant and animal species than hot deserts but still face water stress and periodic droughts.
The term “arid land” is comprehensive, encapsulating diverse ecosystems that are all characterized by their scarcity of water. From severe hot deserts to semi-temperate grasslands, these landscapes, despite their differences, all share the common factor of being dry, promoting unique and resilient life forms.
